The Taiwan Gazette is the online journal component of the Global Taiwan Studies Program, at the Asian Institute, Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto.
Taiwan interests us, tremendously. In less than 20 years, it has become one of Asia’s strongest democracies. It has the continent’s highest level of media freedom, and also the continent’s highest social media penetration rate. Taiwan's universal health care, singing recycling trucks, and semi-conductor industry, are the envy of the world.
Our goal at the Taiwan Gazette is simple: It is time for Taiwan to join the global conversation on issues of global concern. We want to make an online platform about Taiwan, by the 23 million distinctive voices from Taiwan.
We believe Taiwan is making an idiosyncratic contribution to global society, and we want to publish stories about this. The Gazette will post commentaries, interviews, translations, book reviews, and original research and writing about Taiwan. By tapping into the University of Toronto’s active research network, we also plan to cover important Taiwan-related events happening on campus.
The Gazette will also bring you translated works from Taiwan’s most popular Chinese-language new media websites, including Initium Media, The Reporter, and Womany.
